So how did a Finnish woman come to be making top quality Barolo?
Riikka Sukula came to Serralunga in 2005, after a career in the restaurant and Italian wine import business in Finland. Rewind back to when Riikka started the wine import company in Finland, and began to travel and visit producers more intensively, she often heard the producers explaining that, “90% of the work in quality wines is done in the vineyards”, and then they would show you around in the cantina. This 90% of the work intrigued her and she wanted to understand how the highest quality is achieved in wine. She had become friends with a few Piemontese producers and Barolo of course is a wine of the highest ambition. A small property was offered to a friend (Giorgio Rivetti from La Spinetta) and he called Riikka and said he’d found a place for her to explore what had now become her obsession. The vineyards were in good condition and healthy, with quite old vines of 65 years and with very low yields. The vineyards are all around the house in the hillside looking at the Castiglione Falletto village within the cru of Barolo, Meriame. In the vineyards she is working completely organic wishing to make minimal impact to the environment and taking great care in sustaining a lively biodiversity in and around the vineyards. Vinification by indigenous yeasts takes place in Giorgio Rivetti’s Campè cellar nearby in Grinzane Cavour, 10-14 days of alcoholic fermentation with skin and then transferred to tonneaux and a natural malolactic fermentation after which the wine is transferred after 28-29 months in wood to stainless steel tank to settle and stabilize again all naturally and slowly. After bottling the wine rests minimum of 6 months still in the bottle before release.
