Left Foot Charley, Michigan

Left Foot Charley, Michgian Our first domestic entry hails from where?! Michigan! Yes, Michigan! Northern Michigan to be more precise, Traverse City to be exact. Bryan and Jen Ulbrich started Left Foot Charley as Michigan’s first “Urban winery” after Bryan’s long stint with Peninsula Cellars. Bryan keeps a tight relationship with the many growers he sources fruit from on the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas and, similar to Steve Edmunds in CA, is making wines from sourced fruit that epitomize their site specific origins.

“I have spent time in Northern Michigan every summer since I met my wife 20 years ago. Each year, we sample the wines from Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas and they have gotten progressively more interesting over time. This year, tasting Left Foot Charley, lightening struck and it occurred to me that these wines were ready for the world. We believe that Bryan Ulbrich’s efforts to embody the terroir of Northern Michigan are producing wines that can hold their own among the best of any region.”

“Something new is unfolding in the American consciousness. We are beginning to appreciate “place”. Our tables, our songs, our whisky, our wine needs to be from somewhere or it all becomes just another white page. Left Foot Charley is joining this movement and throwing color around like a frenzied painter. We encourage you to grab a smock, a paint brush, and taste our local colors.”
